Chapter Nine
Carlos woke to a smell so heavenly his mouth began to water in anticipation. Bacon. Was there anything that smelled so good? He pulled on his shorts and headed for the kitchen where he found Clay in his boxer briefs at the stove, moving wooden tongs in a frying pan. Carlosâs heart skipped several beats. His boyfriend was making breakfast for him.
Clayâs broad shoulders and muscled back tapered into a âVâ and those sexy dimples above his firm, muscled butt cheeks were evident above the briefsâ waistband. Holy shit, Clay was hot. Carlos liked this look.
Last night, theyâd stayed up for a few more hours, talking about whatâd happened in the hub, whatâd happened on the pier and how thatâd brought up shit Carlos didnât want to revisit. Clay had shared his dream of becoming a detective, and Carlos felt theyâd turned an important cornerâthey were really starting something.
âYou going to stand there and stare at my ass all day?â Clay asked, bringing Carlos out of his musings. âIâm not complaining, mind you, but the bacon might burn.â
âDonât burn the bacon,â Carlos ordered. âThough your ass is spectacular.â
A red flush worked its way up Clayâs throat until it reached his face. âThanks.â
âYouâre welcome,â Carlos chuckled. âSo, you can cook?â
âYep.â Clay plucked three eggs from the carton and began juggling them. âDidnât think a cop could cook?â
âNo, itâs not that. Iâm happy one of us can,â Carlos replied while watching the sideshow. âIs that a new way of scrambling them that I donât know about?â
Clay caught all three and laughed. âSmartass. How do you want your eggs prepared?â
âOver easy, please. Iâll get started on the toast. I can help with the anyone-can-do-this basics.â
Carlos joined Clay at the counter, and before he could even reach for the bread, Clay pulled him into his arms. âGâmorning.â
ââMorning.â Carlos lowered his head, seeking a kiss, which his boyfriend quickly gave. âI thought bacon was the best way to start the day, but I was wrong. Your kiss is.â
Clayâs smile was brilliant. âI vote we try again to make sure.â Which they did spectacularly.
After his head stopped spinning, Carlos placed two pieces of bread into the toaster and took out the butter while Clay fried six eggs. It all felt so wonderfully domestic as they worked together until they had two heaping plates sitting on the islandâs countertop.
Carlos refilled each of their coffee cups before they dug into their morning feast. Carlos could get used to help with food prep as long as Clay was the chef. Not much was said while they ate, neither leaving a crumb over.
âThat was delicious.â Carlos wiped his mouth, leaned over and gave Clay a quick kiss. âThanks.â
Clay laid his arm along the back of Carlosâs chair and said, âYouâre welcome.â
âHow was sleeping on the couch?â Carlos had wanted Clay to stay with him in his bed, but he hadnât worked up the nerve to ask. âNot too bad, I hope.â
âNot at all. You have a comfortable couch. I slept like a log.
